Pathways to Wellness: Intro

During the past few decades, most Western industrialized populations have over-burdened our health.  We tend towards long periods of stress, too little sleep, not enough exercise or water, diets too high in sugars, starches and fats and deficient in nutrients and other kinds of behavior injurious to health such as smoking, excess alcohol consumption, recreational drugs, reckless driving and working under hazardous conditions.

In the United States alone the business and agricultural complex dumps nearly 6,000,000,000 pounds of health threatening chemicals each year into our environment and food supply. This toxic burden compounded by errors in pharmaceutical medications and medical care have become one of the leading causes (25-36%) of hospital admissions.

This personal and social negligence has lead the United States population into a decline in overall level of wellness. Even though the United States spends more on healthcare than any other industrialized nation (approximately 15% of the gross national product), there is an alarming increase in chronic illnesses(*) that conventional healthcare systems manage mainly via pharmaceuticals, surgery and rehabilitation therapies.  However, the conventional healthcare system more often falls short of actually preventing or curing chronic illnesses because approximately 80% of the cause of most chronic illnesses is lifestyle – including thoughts and attitudes.

Therefore, the prevention, remission and cures of chronic illness are more likely to occur when patients  (1) are armed with knowledge, (2) are committed to a lifestyle that promotes wellness and (3) associate mainly with people and activities that support healthy lifestyles and environments.

Treatments

To be effective, a treatment should be based on correctly identifying the cause.

Accidents, injuries, strokes, heart problems,  infectious diseases and similar "urgent" health challenges  are considered "acute" and are usually best handled by the biomedical or conventional healthcare system.   Biomedical technology and expertise is second to none in diagnostics and  acting quickly  to save lives and prevent complications.

Longstanding and chronic illnesses* require a different treatment approach because their causes are so closely tied to lifestyle.  The treatment of chronic illnesses must be based primarily on helping patients make wellness promoting lifestyle changes.  (For a better understanding of how lifestyle influences wellness, go to
CWST Holistic Approach.).

Conventional biomedicine remains an important and necessary part of diagnosing and treating but it should  accompany appropriate complementary approaches that address the patient's lifestyle and empower the patient to take more responsibility in promoting his/her own wellness.  To determine which complementary treatments to recommend requires knowledge of the patient’s personal and family history, their symptoms, fears, likes and dislikes, what motivates and inspires them…and which changes are likely to be wellness promoting.  This information is obtained from the Wellness Self Test, the Patient Forms and the consultation.
